It is going to take us two days to get to Cape Town. We leave Minneapolis tomorrow at 11:12a.m. and land in Atlanta, GA at 2:42 p.m. Our flight to Johannesburg doesn't leave until 7:10 p.m. so we have a few hours to kill in Atlanta, not enough to actually go anywhere but more than enough for us to get bored. Since we're flying standby to Johannesburg we actually have to retrieve our luggage in baggage claim since we can't check our luggage all the way through to South Africa, and then go through security again , so that will take up some time. I need black shoelaces and Don needs a new wallet so we'll go shopping at the airport, how exciting. A combined lunch/dinner will take up some more time. Are you yawning yet?
The hardest part will be the white knuckle time spent staring at the monitor at the gate, hoping to get cleared and a seat assignment for the flight. Once that happens (keeping our fingers crossed!) we get on the plane for a 15 hour 45 minute flight. We land in Johannesburg the next day at 5pm and go through customs. We have arranged for a taxi to take us to our hotel where we'll try to rest up and get a decent night of sleep. The next morning we go back to the airport for our 11:50 a.m. flight to Cape Town and we land at 2pm. Another taxi to the home we'll be living in for the next 3 weeks and then we'll be set! I got tired just typing this. Here is a picture from our home exchange in Kaui, Hawaii to perk things up a bit -
